Ousted Xstrata boss Mick Davis is in talks with more investors,
after securing $1billion in private funding for his new mining venture X2.



The South African started X2 after he was forced to make way for Glencore boss
Ivan Glasenberg in the mining mega-merger with Xstrata.



His first investors will be commodities trading giant Noble and private equity group Texas Pacific Group, which said yesterday they would each
put in $500million.

And sources familiar with X2's plans said that Davis is
speaking to a ‘handful' of potential new investors, with the
aim of securing similar amounts from a small stable of
firms.

Sovereign wealth funds, privately wealthy families
and large pension funds are understood to be among the parties to
express an interest in pumping money into X2.

The venture will see Davis capitalise on his experience with Xstrata to identify undervalued mining projects which are starved of
investment.

Major mining firms have pulled back from some projects in the light of weaker commodity
prices, while some smaller firms have run out of cash to develop mines.


Davis wants to snap up such assets, believing that the markets are being
too pessimistic about the outlook for certain commodities.


X2 is likely to focus on commodities that continue to make money throughout the growth cycle of developing countries.


These will include copper, zinc and nickel, metals
which are not just in demand for early-stage industrial
development, but also in the more advanced stages of economic growth in emerging markets.



The company operates from a Mayfair office, the use of which Glencore Xstrata gave to Davis
rent free for a year, under the terms of his departure from the firm.
Goldman Sachs is X2's financial adviser.
